Science & Society Picture Library represents the collections of the Science Museum, the National Railway Museum and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television - as well as a variety of related collections.
We are located in South Kensington within the Science Museum where we have been trading for over a decade and can be contacted using these details.
We now have over 150 image collections from both within and outside the museums' core collections. These contain over 70,000 online records, including over 40,000 digital images. The range of collections can be viewed here and we perform a wider search of our offline collection by request.
There are three methods of searching: the basic search, the advanced search and browsing using categories.
Enter in the keyword(s) that relate to the image that you require. Multiple keywords will search for images with both keywords in e.g. 'Queen Victoria' will search for images with both 'Queen' and 'Victoria'
It is also possible to search within your results so that having found all the 'Queen Victoria' images you could tick the search within results and enter 'Albert' to find all the 'Queen Victoria' images that also include 'Albert'
Finally if you have a reference number you can enter it here to e.g. a barcode 10235532, an inventory number 1996-2837_0001 or a library number SML-u473734_plate3.
If you have precise idea of the details of the image you require then the advanced search offers many more options.
Some examples include:
Filter your search by restricting keywords e.g. All the images with 'Football' but not 'Goal'
Filter by country e.g. All images with 'weather' in Scotland.
Filter by orientation e.g. All landscape (horizontal) images
If you have a fast Internet connection you may also wish to increase the number of images displayed - up to 100 results per page.
Each of the images have three levels of categorisation, so an image of The Helston Furry Dance, Cornwall, 1968 is contained in SOCIETY & WARS > Social & Economic Life > Community Life, Processions & Parades
You browse using the categories by selecting Categories from the menu bar and then selecting the relevant subjects. You can also select a category when you are in the Image Preview screen by just clicking on the category.
The lightbox is the ideal place to keep track of the images you like before reviewing which ones you'd like to order. After signing in, you can either use the default lightbox or create a new named one of your own. To add to the lightbox either click on the lightbox icon in the search results page or the 'add to lightbox' icon on the preview page (both indicated above). You will see a mini version added to the lightbox at the bottom of the preview page (or you can select your lightbox from the menu bar).
You can add as many images as you wish and they be remembered even if you come back another day. To remove them just click on the lightbox icon with a red cross.
If you'd prefer not to have a pop-up reminder when you add each item then there is the option to check the 'Disable popup to confirm lightbox addition' in the Lightbox area.
The lightbox feature will also allow you to:
Have multiple Lightboxes
E-Mail a lightbox
Add notes to the overall lightbox
Add notes to individual images in a lightbox
Print a lightbox including the notes
Move/Copy images from one lightbox to another.
Change the order of your images using drop and drag.
First bring up the lightbox of the images that you wish to select from to create your order. It is straightforward to select from multiple lightboxes if required.
Just click on the shopping basket icon to add to your order box until you have added all the images you wish to order. Then click on order or select My Order from the My Account menu.
You will then be presented with an Order Summary to allow you to verify your order.
When you are happy with your order then choose to continue. Otherwise you can remove the images you decide not to order simply by clicking on remove.
Finally your images are collated into one zip file that will automatically start to download. It is recommended that you save this file and then uncompress the file to retrieve your images.
If something has gone wrong with the download or you clicked cancel by mistake you can always re-download the images by clicking on here on the Download Progressing page.
An e-mail is sent both to yourself detailing what you wished to order, and also to the researchers at the picture library. They will then contact you to negotiate the rights required to use the image and they will then send you the high-resolution files.
