'Historic Bath', GWR/LMS poster, 1946.

Photo of 'Historic Bath', GWR/LMS poster, 1946.

Poster produced for the Great Western Railway (GWR) and London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Bath, Avon. The poster shows a fashionably dressed 18th century lady being carried in a sedan chair. Natural hot springs had originally drawn the Romans to Bath, while in the 18th century the city became the most fashionable resort in the country. Many fine Georgian buildings remain as a testament to Bath's 18th century heyday. Artwork by Frank Newbould (1887-1951), who studied at Bradford College of Art and joined the War Office in 1942. He also designed posters for the Orient Line and Belgian Railways.
