Etching of Brassey (1805-1870). In 1834 while working as a land surveyor Brassey met George Stephenson (1781-1848) and as a result won a contract to build a railway viaduct at Bromborough, Cheshire. He was also involved in the building of the Grand Junction Railway with Joseph Locke, the Victoria Docks in London, the Lancaster & Carlisle Railway, the Caledonian Railway, the Great Northern Railway, and the Paris & Le Havre Railway in France. Brassey went on to become a very successful railway contractor throughout the world.
