Dey dial recorder, early 20th century.

Early Dey dial recorder, made in the USA. In 1880 Dr Alexander Dey invented the first dial recorder to track the hours worked by employees. In 1907, Dey's business was acquired by the International Time Recording Company which later became IBM.
