Model (scale 1:44). The 16 'A' class submarines, completed between 1944 and 1947, were intended for service in the Far East. Special attention was given to habitability. The 'Amphion', the first of the class, was laid down in 1943 at Vickers. Snort air valves were fitted which enabled her Diesel engines to run when the submarine was submerged at periscope depth. The armament included one 4-inch gun, one 20-mm anti-aircraft gun and ten 21-inch torpedo tubes. She was 281.7 ft long, with a submerged displacement of 1620 tons. One of the ‘A’ class vessels, HMS Affray, was lost with all hands off the Channel Islands in 1951 probably due to her snort air valve snapping off whilst submerged.
