Model. This was a later version of the bathyscaphe, the first enclosed, airtight machine ever to descend to great depths under water with men inside it. The machine was conceived by Auguste Piccard, an American citizen of Swiss origin. She was launched at Naples in 1953, and purchased by the United States Navy in 1958. On 23rd January 1960, with United States Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Piccard’s son Jacques, a Swiss scientist, on board, the Trieste descended to a depth of 35,800 feet at Challenger Deep off Guam in the Pacific; the deepest point in the world’s oceans. In 1963 the ‘Trieste’ took part in the search in the Atlantic for the missing American nuclear submarine USS Thresher.
