Watercolour drawing by E Rees showing the 'Tartar', a locomotive of the 'Iron Duke' class designed by Sir Daniel Gooch (1816-1889) and built at the GWR's Swindon Works. Until 1864 many of the GWR's locomotives were designed by Gooch, who built a total of 340 engines for the railway at Swindon. The Iron Duke class locomotives were capable of speeds approaching 80 mph.
