Side elevation drawing made for a Science Museum display from an original at the National Railway Museum, York, c 1955. It shows the locomotive, which was designed by the Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick (1771-1833) and built in 1803 and was the first steam engine to operate on rails, running at Coalbrookdale, near Telford, Telford & Wrekin. Trevithick pioneered the use of high pressure steam, and his designs for lightweight high-pressure steam engines formed the basis for all future steam-propelled transport.
