Plucker's quartic surfaces, 19th century.

Photo of Plucker's quartic surfaces, 19th century.

Model of curved surface and formula described by Julius Plucker (1801-1868) at the British Association in 1866. The shape of a surface may be expressed as an algebraic relationship. This gives an equation which defines the surface. An equation is a quartic when it contains no power of the co-ordinates higher than the fourth.
