Sir Arthur William Rucker (1848-1915) was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Yorkshire College, Leeds in 1874 where he remained until 1886 when he became the Professor of Physics at the Royal College of Science in London. By 1901 Rucker was the Principal of the University of London and the President of the British Association. He was awarded a Royal Medal in 1891, and knighted 11 years later. Rucker was also President of the Physical Society from 1893 to 1895.
