Sir Arthur Schuster (1851-1934) was President of the Physical Society, 1912-1914. Schuster studied at Heidelberg and Cambridge and went on to become professor of applied mathematics (1881) and physics (1888-1907) at Manchester University. Schuster researched spectroscopy and terrestial magnetism and the Schuster-Smith magnetometer is the recognised instrument for measuring the earth’s magnetic force.
