This was the first computer produced by Science of Cambridge Ltd (formerly Sinclair Electronics Ltd). The Mk 14 microcomputer, released in 1978 and retailing for £39.95 in kit form, was one of the first affordable computers, laying the foundations of the home computer market. It rapidly developed from a single board machine into a multi-board, modular system with additional extras, such as a cassette interface module (for recording and storage), a VDU module (which allowed words or graphics to be displayed on a domestic TV), and a PROM programmer (for running preprogrammed applications).
