The Sedan chair probably originated in Italy, but this example is from India. The enclosed chair was mounted on two parallel horizontal poles and carried by two porters, one in front, the other behind. Licensed sedan chairs first appeared in London around 1632, and were a cheaper form of transport than Hackney coaches.
