Pen-y-darran locomotive, 1804. Model. The locomotive represented by this conjectural model was designed by Richard Trevithick and was the first steam engine to run on rails. There are no records to show exactly how the locomotive was built: this model is based on the drawing of Trevithick's 1803 locomotive rescaled to suit the gauge of the Pen-y-darran line, which ran between Merthyr Tydfil and Abercynon in Wales. The locomotive weighed five tons and was capable of hauling a load four times its own weight at a steady five mph.
