Electric tramcar, 1883.

Photo of Electric tramcar, 1883.

Illustration taken from the 'Illustrated London News' (Vol 83, 1883). 'When Anthony Reckenzaun of the Electrical Storage Company developed a tramcar which was able to carry its own medium-voltage power supply and ride on an unfenced track, he was asked to provide a demonstration on 10 March 1883. Unfortunately, the demonstration was beset with difficulty; the drive belt kept slipping and the tramcar ended up being pulled by horses. The periodical 'Engineering' commented that 'it was a pity that electric traction should have been made to look so ridiculous'.
