Albumen print showing navvies in the cutting at the south entrance to Dove Holes tunnel on the Midland Railway's (MR) Rowsley to Buxton extension line. The line was built to connect the MR system with Manchester and, although only 13 miles long, its construction took four years. Crossing the steep valleys and moors of the Derbyshire Peak District was a major engineering project and the Dove Holes Tunnel was nearly 1 3/4 miles long.
