'Stinger' tyre-deflation system, c 1999.

Photo of 'Stinger' tyre-deflation system, c 1999.

Tyre-deflation system used by the Metropolitan police. A stinger is a metal device with a handle on one side and pins on the top. The pins in the stinger deflate the tyres as the car drives over them causing the car to stop quickly but safely. The police use the tyre-deflation system in the pursuit of stolen cars where the stinger can be thrown across the road to stop the stolen vehicle but removed again quickly so as not to harm the pursuing car.
