Photo of ‘Field Marshal the Rt Hon Earl Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, 1914’.

Postcard. Born in Ireland, and educated in Switzerland and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) joined the Royal Engineers in 1871. His military career included service in the Sudan, which he won back for Egypt after the death of General Gordon at Khartoum in 1885. He was commander-in-chief in the Boer War in 1900-1902 and was made a Field Marshal in 1909 and an Earl in 1914. In August 1914, at the outbreak of the Great War (1914-1918), he was appointed Secretary of State for War. His face was featured on a famous recruitment poster for the army, which inspired 3 million men to enlist. He died aboard HMS Hampshire, when the ship was sunk by a mine off Orkney in June 1916.
