Photogravure from an earlier painting or photograph of Baer (1792-1876). As part of his research into mammalian embryo development, Baer identified the notochord which develops into the backbone and skull in vertebrates. He showed that the embryos of various species are very similar at first, for example a bird and a human look alike, because the embryos of higher animals pass through stages which resemble those in the development of lower animals.
