Photogravure after an earlier painting. Forster (1729-1798) accompanied James Cook on his second world voyage aboard the ‘Resolution’, (1772-1775). As well as being a clergyman, he was a pioneer ornithologist of Antarctica, New Zealand and the Pacific. Forster’s tern is named after him. He was appointed professor of natural history at Halle in Germany in 1780. From a collection of portraits of scientists published by Photographische Gesellschaft, Berlin, 1910.
