In a macabre scene, a man appears to be drowning in a river downstream from a watermill, while on a hilltop, a body hangs from a gallows. The illustration depicts an old rhyme or song known either as ‘The Three Jolly Rogues of Lynne’ or ‘King Arthur’, describing the fate of the king’s three sons. Both versions describe the demise of a miller, weaver and tailor who respectively steal corn, yarn and broadcloth. The miller drowns in his dam, the weaver was hung in his yarn and the little tailor was taken by the devil.
