Sir Edward Frankland, English chemist, c 1863-1883.

Poster for the Chemical Society Banquet, 11 November 1898 with photographs of six past presidents from 1863-1883 including Sir Edward Frankland (1825-1899). Frankland is notable for introducing the concept now known as valency. He also discovered the presence of helium in the sun’s atmosphere with Sir Norman Lockyer (1836-1920). In 1853 Frankland was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and received the Copley Medal in 1894. Also pictured are Joseph Henry Gilbert, William Odling, Fredric Augustus Abel, John Hall Gladstone and Alexander W Williamson.
