Lithograph by Champin of the ancient capital of the Inca empire, seen from Quiscapampa, with the Andes in the distance. From ‘Expedition dans les parties centrales de l'Amerique du Sud’ (‘Expedition in the central parts of South America’), by Francis de Castelnau (1812-1880), published in Paris in 1852. This is an account of the French government’s scientific expedition led by Castelnau in the years 1843-1847. The party travelled across South America to La Paz in Bolivia, making meteorological, botanical and zoological observations.
