Engraving by J Chapman made c 1812, of Klopstock (1724-1803). Below is a glowing lyre with the word ‘Messiah’, a reference to his religious epic ‘Der Messias’ (‘The Messiah’) which Klopstock began in 1745 and completed 28 years later in 1773. Illustration from ‘Encyclopaedia Londinensis, or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature’ published in London, 1810-1829.
