Edgley Viaduct, Stockport, about 1890

The widening of Edgley Viaduct, Stockport, about 1890. This viaduct, which crosses the River Mersey, is on the London & North Western Railway. The L&NWR was formed in 1846. It expanded many times throughout the 19th century. The company liked to have several tracks on one route so that slow trains could be overtaken, so expansion and rebuilding was common.
