The Sankey Viaduct by T T Bury, February 1831. The Sankey Viaduct was built by George Stephenson, and was opened in 1830. It was on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which was the first ‘inter-city’ railway in the world. The viaduct crossed the Sankey canal, 70 feet above ground level. The ground around the canal was very soft and piles had to be driven into the ground to stabilise the viaduct.
