Digital positive image generated from original glass negative taken 2 days after the accident. RAF Fauld was a bomb dump and bomb repair facility near the village of Hanbury, Burton on Trent. On 27 November 1944, up to 4,000 tons of bombs exploded, killing between 30 and 70 people, and creating enormous craters in the landscape. The following have been suggested as possible causes: the cutting of corners and poor management in the wartime rush to supply the fighting forces, storage of primed bombs with detonators installed, poor management and record-keeping, and a German V2 rocket attack.
