Trade card of Newton & Co, 3 Fleet Street, London, 1865.

The trade card was found in a wooden case containing an orrery with brass gearwork and a paper scale showing eight planets out to Neptune, made by Newton and Co. The company, which succeeded that of Newton and Son (John and William Newton), operated from around 1861 until 1885, and held the title ‘Opticians and Globe Makers to the Queen’. The trade card lists the prizes awarded to the company at the London exhibitions of 1851,1862 and 1865, and those received in Paris, India and Brazil.
