Workers checking track, 1914

Permanent way workers checking track, 14 November 1914. At this time all track work was done manually. Track was lifted with jacks and put into place by hand. Workers worked in small teams under a foreman, looking after short areas of track. As well as being responsible for relaying track, the workers examined the track twice a day, checking for cracks, loose bolts and worn rails.
